Intrepid Travel

See how Intrepid Travel partnered with Socialsuite to complete a Board-endorsed double materiality assessment for its 2026 B Corp recertification under the new B Lab 2025 Standards.

Company Overview

Intrepid Travel is a certified B Corp, founded in Melbourne in 1989 by Darrell Wade and Geoff Manchester. Majority owned by its co-founders and team, Intrepid operates more than 1,000 small-group trips through a global network of destination management companies, taking travellers to real places the local way. It also operates a portfolio of local and boutique accommodation under the Stay Intrepid brand. Certified B Corporation since 2018, Intrepid's not-for-profit, The Intrepid Foundation, has raised over AUD $20 million for local partners since 2002, and the business has built its model around using travel as a force for good.

Double Materiality Assessment (Materiality Management Platform)

Background

Raising the bar for B Corp recertification (the need for an assessment that satisfies both B Lab and the Board)

As a certified B Corporation, Intrepid Travel balances purpose with profit, and its latest recertification cycle called for a materiality assessment that could stand up to real scrutiny, both from B Lab's assessors and from Intrepid's own Board. Having built a strong foundation with an earlier assessment, Intrepid wanted a partner who could bring structure, technology, and methodology expertise to bear on the next iteration, while building on the deep destination and stakeholder knowledge already inside the business.

Implementation

Twelve stakeholder groups, 1,800+ voices, one rigorous process

Socialsuite worked alongside Intrepid's own Purpose team throughout the process, starting with a detailed look at where Intrepid's operations and value chain actually creates impact or face risk; from its network of local tour leaders and accommodation partners through to the traveller experience itself. From there, together we identified twelve distinct stakeholder groups whose perspective mattered, well beyond the usual list of employees and customers, to include destination communities, Indigenous tourism organisations, conservation groups, and even a considered proxy for the stakeholders who can't speak for themselves: the natural environment and future generations.

‍

Socialsuite's platform did the heavy lifting on structure and scale, centralising more than 1,800 stakeholder responses that would otherwise have been managed manually across spreadsheets and email threads, while Socialsuite's advisory team brought an outside perspective and methodology rigor to complement Intrepid's own deep knowledge of its destinations and operations. Throughout the process, Socialsuite conducted ongoing quality control against B Lab’s 2025 Standards and requirements, a step that surfaced genuine areas to strengthen before the assessment went to leadership.

‍

The resulting determination, covering 22 material topics across Intrepid's operations and value chain, moved through Intrepid's senior leadership, its Core Management Team, and ultimately its Board, who formally reviewed and endorsed the assessment in August 2026.

Results

A Board-ready assessment that passed B Corp verification

The process gave Intrepid's Board a clear, well-evidenced picture of the issues that matter most, backed by real stakeholder voice rather than assumption. Intrepid's B Corp verification audit confirmed the assessment met the required standard, with one area flagged for improvement, being even more explicit about how the assessment weighs severity against likelihood, addressed directly as part of the final reporting.

‍

For Intrepid, the value went beyond the certification requirement itself: having a technology partner manage the process end-to-end meant the internal team could focus on what they know best, their destinations, their communities, and their people, while Socialsuite handled the structure needed to turn that expertise into a defensible, Board-ready outcome.

“Socialsuite gave us the structure and rigor to turn what we already knew about our business into a Board-ready determination we could stand behind at every level. It felt like a genuine partnership, not just a piece of software.”
